Place of Changing Winds Syrah No 2 2021 (6-pack)
A$252.00

This wine is a blend of both the Heathcote and Harcourt fruit. The aim has been to produce an accessibly priced Syrah that will drink well early. Having said this, 2021 was a very powerful year so even here the wine has serious intensity, good tannins and age-worthiness. About 60% whole bunches were used and the wine was matured in a range of wood (mostly neutral Stockinger cask) and concrete for 16 months, before resting in tanks for six months prior to bottling in late February 2023. It really benefits from plenty of air at this stage so we encourage drinkers to decant.

Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah 2021 (6-pack)
A$354.00

Here’s our first pure expression of the soils and climate of Harcourt North in the Bendigo G.I. of Victoria (about an hour’s drive north of our cellars). We believe this specific place, with its pure, sandy granite soils and its mild climate, is one of the most exciting terroirs for Syrah in Australia. About half whole-bunch, the wine underwent almost two years of maturation, one year in neutral wood (barrique through to 1000lt) and one year in an unlined concrete tank. Bottling was late February 2023. This is a vineyard that can grow wines of tremendous perfume and finesse, even if the 2021 is a deeper, more structured style, reflecting the season. The wine reminds us of something like a top Morgon, with good tannins.

Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Marsanne 2021 (6 pack)
A$354.00

This year our Marsanne comes from the same vineyard that has gifted our Harcourt Syrah. There is also a fair dollop of Roussanne in the blend, from the same site. Following our previous practice with this wine, the grapes were picked fully ripe, pressed hard, and sent straight to barrel (500 and 228lt) for fermentation and aging. Malolactic was left to happen naturally. After twelve months in cask, the wine was racked to tank for an additional ten months before being bottled at the start of February 2023. It will certainly age, gaining more and more honeyed characters, but it’s delicious now. It has the same power and richness of previous releases, yet with more vibrancy thanks to the Harcourt soils and climate, and the inclusion of some Roussanne in the blend.

Place of Changing Winds Between Two Mountains Pinot Noir 2021
A$115.00

Place of Changing Winds vineyard is located between two mountains—Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook—hence the name of this cuvée. This wine ended up being around 1/3rd whole bunches and spent nineteen months maturing in Stockinger casks with no new oak. It’s a powerful Pinot, yet it still has great finesse and loads of upfront fruit. It will certainly drink well young, but we’re certain that it will age for a very long time, based on the balance and ample structure. It’s a blend of several parcels.

Place of Changing Winds High Density Pinot Noir 2021
A$185.00

Here the fruit was mostly destemmed, with less than 10% whole bunch, however, there was some hand destemming (with scissors) of the fruit from our highest density vines (33,000 vines/ha) which kept these berries completely intact on their pedicel. The aging was for nineteen months in low-impact Stockinger wood, 25% of which was new. The name may be a little misleading as all our vines are “high density”, but the blend for this wine is based on our very highest density vines; those planted at 20,000/ha to 33,000/ha. This is a more serious and structured wine, built for aging. At the same time, you will still find the finesse that we strive for, as well as great freshness and energy. It’s a wine that will certainly live for decades but should make for pleasurable drinking at any stage of its life.

Place of Changing Winds Larderdark Chardonnay 2021
A$125.00

Larderdark is the historical name of the forest that surrounds Place of Changing Winds. In 2021, only a minuscule 564kg of Chardonnay was harvested but with incredible quality worthy of being the first release under this label. The terrible yields were thanks to frost and difficult flowering and the grapes were finally harvested on April 7th, foot stomped and immediately pressed as hard as possible to extract every drop of juice from the thick-skinned, tiny berries. The must was then sent straight to barrel with all its solids and fermentation occurred in a two-year-old Dominique Laurent 228lt and even older barrique. The wine was racked to a two-year-old Stockinger hogshead (300lt) for eighteen months of aging, with the balance being kept aside in a small topping tank. Malo was allowed to proceed naturally and completed very late. An exceptional wine has resulted from all these details; rich and deep, yet with great acidity and impact. It is complex and powerful in every way.
